Alliance of Resident Theatres
CLAIRE FRIEDLANDER FAMILY FOUNDATION ARTS & CULTURE AWARD FINALIST
The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is the only organization exclusively dedicated to serving New York City’s nonprofit theatre community. Our programs and resources seek to develop a healthier, more sustainable field in which artists are empowered to create. Founded in 1972 by a group of 49 artistic directors, we now assist more than 400 member theatres in managing their companies effectively so they may realize their rich artistic visions and serve their diverse audiences well. Nearly 70% of our members have operating budgets under $250K, many are led by BIPOC artists, and most are dedicated to new work. Historically, our groundbreaking initiatives have addressed systemic issues in the field and continue to improve the long term health and sustainability of the nonprofit theatre ecosystem. Current programs include a robust offering of subsidized space rentals, grants and funding, leadership and professional development workshops, and educational trainings. In 2010, in recognition of our leadership, innovation, and public service, A.R.T./New York received a special Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre.
